UK Student Visa Process for Indian Students – A Practical Guide

A step-by-step guide to the UK Student visa process for Indian students — from CAS to biometrics and decision.

Stage 1 — Receive an Unconditional Offer and CAS

The UK Student visa application starts with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university. A CAS is issued only after your offer is unconditional — meaning you have met all academic and language conditions.

The CAS contains a unique reference number and details about your course, fees and start date. You need this to apply for the visa.

Stage 2 — Check Your Eligibility

Before applying, confirm you meet the following requirements:

  • You have a valid CAS from a licensed UKVI Student sponsor
  • You have sufficient funds per UKVI requirements
  • You meet the English language requirement (IELTS, PTE or equivalent, at the required level)
  • You can demonstrate your intention to study

Stage 3 — Prepare Your Documents

Key documents for the UK Student visa application include the CAS number, financial evidence (bank statements for the required period), English language certificate, academic transcripts, a valid passport with sufficient validity, and a recent passport-size photo.

Some applicants may also need to provide parental consent documents, ATAS clearance (for specific research topics) or other supplementary evidence. Check the official UKVI checklist for your specific situation.

If the family needs more clarity on the fund amount, 28-day rule or accepted bank evidence, review the UK Student visa financial requirements guide before submission planning.

Stage 4 — Submit the Online Application

Apply online via the UK Visas and Immigration portal (gov.uk). Pay the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). The IHS gives you access to the NHS during your stay and is paid upfront for the full duration of your visa.

Stage 5 — Book and Attend Your Biometrics Appointment

After submitting your application, book a biometrics appointment at a UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) centre in India. You will provide fingerprints and a photograph. Take your supporting documents to the appointment.

Stage 6 — Wait for the Decision

UKVI will review your application and issue a decision. If approved, you will receive a vignette (sticker) in your passport valid for travel to the UK. Your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) will be available for collection in the UK after arrival.
